NSAID alternative Quercetin

Updated: Mar 16, 2024

Part 1/2

Recently, a patient shared their positive experience using quercetin to alleviate symptoms of osteoarthritis. They not only praised its effectiveness in relieving joint pain but also highlighted its surprising impact on reducing allergy symptoms. This prompted a reflection on my early years as a chiropractor when I frequently recommended quercetin and Bromelain as alternatives to NSAIDs like ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. Somehow, I had temporarily overlooked the versatility of this supplement.

In this blog entry, let's delve into the topic of quercetin. We'll explore its mechanisms within the body, identify foods rich in quercetin, discuss its potential benefits for various conditions, and outline my recommendations for its supplementation. Join me in unraveling the potential of quercetin and discovering how it might be a valuable addition to your wellness routine.

Quercetin belongs to a group of plant flavonoids that contribute to the color of fruits, flowers, and vegetables. These flavonoids, including quercetin, act as antioxidants, helping the body eliminate free radicals. Free radicals, by-products of cellular metabolism, include reactive oxygen species (ROS), which, at low or moderate levels, have beneficial effects in cells (1). However, intense physical exercise can elevate ROS production, potentially causing damage to cells (3).

In my practice, I often recommend quercetin as a supplement, particularly for relieving muscle soreness following intense workouts and exercises. It has shown effectiveness in accelerating the recovery of muscle function, attenuating muscle damage, and reducing soreness after strenuous physical activity (2). This becomes crucial as intense exercise can lead to oxidative stress, upsetting the balance in cells. Compounds like quercetin, with their antioxidant effects, play a vital role in restoring balance and preventing cell damage, thereby mitigating inflammation caused by injuries.

In the next installment (Part 2), I plan to explore the foods rich in quercetin and discuss its supplement form. Stay tuned for a comprehensive understanding of integrating quercetin into your lifestyle for optimal well-being.
